IGPS Munster organised a visit to Annes Grove in Castletownroche today. Annes Grove is the creation of the Annesley family and Patrick Annesley is the last of the family to care for the garden and the important collection of plants held there – rhododendrons being an especially significant part of the collection. Patrick has transferred ownership of Annes Grove to the state which will ensure this garden and plant collection are preserved and available to the Irish people.
The gardens are presently being renovated by the Office of Public Works and we were very fortunate that Neil Porteous, who is acting as garden advisor to the OPW, gave very generously of his time to bring us around the garden and explain what work had been done and what was planned for the immediate future. There is no doubt but it will be once again a very great and significant garden.
